When I think of childhood food memories, the first that pops up every time is of the four of us siblings, ages 9 (oldest, me) to baby sis age 5, lined up at the double kitchen. Two had to have chairs, the other two stood. We helped mom can peaches – she did the scalding then brought the peaches to the sink of cold water, where two littlest slipped the skins, next oldest cut the peaches in two (butter knife)to remove the pits, and I packed jars. What a glorious, juicy sweet, wet, laughing, teasing time we had every September, for quite a number of years! Mom put up about 100 qts of peaches and pears every season, to help feed her growing family. That was over 60 years ago!
My earliest memories of food, being in the veg garden eating strawberries straight from the plant and helping my mother shell peas. I would have been about two-and-a-half years old but it's so vivid and I credit having a veg garden for instilling in me a love of raw fruit and veg. So much easier to be raw if you love the basic ingredients already.
Mmmm fresh cherries in sweet banana-y almond milk…yummy. Thank you for the chance to win your e-book. My childhood food memory is helping my mummy make Christmas pudding. I loved stirring all the dried fruits together and nibbling on raisins and currants as we went..!
Just tweeted the giveaway (I'm grnknittinggal)
i pinned the giveaway on my pinterest profile 🙂
When my father was a teenager, his parents sent him from the city to live on a farm with his grandparents. His grandmother made cinnamon rolls every Sunday morning. She didn't use a recipes but just threw it together. My father bugged her and finally got her to let him measure the ingredients so he could write down the recipe.
When I was young my father taught me how to make them. We had to kneed for 15 minutes, let the dough rise twice, shape the rolls and let them rise again. It was an all day affair, but so worth it to share those just baked rolls.
Yum! I am really enjoying your Saturday kid's recipes!! I will have to try this with my nieces (maybe put some cherries also into the blender as they love PINK).
My favourite food memory from childhood is going strawberry picking with my father (now deceased) and then coming home to make our own jam. We always made lots so we could give them as presents in the summer.
Favorite childhood food memory? That's really tough, mostly because I come from a family of foodies… It would have to be either the birthday crepes or the once-yearly homemade yeast-raised fried donuts that still absolutely rock my world. 🙂
This is silly, but when I was 4 years old, I was so tickled every time my mom cut my sandwich into fourths. I was 4, and there were FOUR little sandwiches!
Favorite childhood food… well pancakes of course! :o)
I've always been very petite, and when I was a child I was TINY! my parents would lay on their backs, lift their feet into the air, then i would lay on top of their feet belly first and "fly" around. 🙂 it was the best!
My favorite food memory is playing at the pool all day then bbqing eating watermelon playing. Good times!

just found your wonderful blog and favorited it for regular references!! when i thought of my fav childhood food memory….immediately i remembered when someone brought deer meat to my parents and when i walked into the room as my mom was serving it and took a bite of such an unusual wild flavor, i asked what it was. that answer was the moment i realized that animals were killed for us to eat. i couldn't eat dead flesh again….what a powerful awakening moment that has forever changed my life and impacted my six daughters who were raised vegan. nothing like fresh picked peas, so beautifully packaged, opened and popped into the mouth!
Favourite childhood memory…probably all the time we spent camping! 🙂
And I Tweeted.
Definitely ice cold watermelon on a hot day!
Cooking just about anything in the kitchen from a recipe book – and I think that's what has me loving to try new things and eat adventurously now: any recipe I wanted to try was fair game to make!
we loved when mom fried what we call "barriguitas de vieja" lol -old ladys belly- its like a croguette made out of pumpkin and sweet. Today I use coconut oil to fry it or for a healthier version just bake them. yuuuummmmmm!

I have the most lovely memories of helping my grandfather in his garden. Well, by helping I mean eating up all the baby carrots and string beans! There are very vivid memories of his freshly-picked tomatoes, Nana would chop them up really chunky and put them into salads and there was a certain smell and taste that only his tomatoes had. My grandfather passed away about 10 years ago, but his memory lives on in my family, especially whenever we have the pleasure of working with garden-fresh veggies! I Picture him out in his garden with the sun shining, I think it was his own style of meditation.
I love this blog, and check in on it almost daily- thank you so much for all of the wonderful recipes! I have been making the cucumber soup regularly since I discovered the recipe, DELICIOUS!!!
many of my childhood food memories involve my grandmother: we went collecting walnuts togheter and them peeled them togheter, getting even the skins of, eating a tiny amount at a time; her famous apple cake, of which you just could not take one slice; the rabarber she grew in her garden; how she had to force me to eat spinach (that's not a problem any more)….
thank you for your give-away and thank you for making me remember!
That looks delicious, I love using bananas and almond milk! My favorite childhood memories of food involve going berry picking. Strawberries are my favorite. I loved picking strawberries then cutting them into thin slices to put in homemade graham cracker crust. We whipped up heavy cream with some sugar and vanilla to put on top. Yum!
Hiking on the mountain behind my house and playing in the creek were fun!
Once when I was 6, I ate half a watermelon all by myself and then couldn't move and was in agony, immobile on the living room floor. It was worth it, the watermelon was fresh, ripe and delicious and that was a special treat for a little kid in Anchorage, Alaska, let me tell you!
when I was a little girl, there was nothing better than picking fresh fruits and vegetables with my mom in her garden. There wasn't one thing in there that I didn't like to eat..it was perfection! My favorite thing to eat was green and yellow beans, I loved how they were always so crisp and crunchy! To me, this was heaven :))
I grew up very close to my cousins and aunts/uncles. We would go over to my grandparents every Sunday for dinner and would play yard games for hours and hours!
fresh cherries? my niece would love that!

Although my mother grew a large garden, I don't remember eating fresh vegetables very often as a child. Almost every dinner contained a vegetable side — but it came out of a can. It took me a long time to relearn what green beans and peas are supposed to taste like!
My favorite childhood food memory is gathering pecans from my grandmom's pecan tree and making pound cake. 🙂
I've also tweeted your give away!
My grandparents once signed us up for a mushroom-picking class. It was wonderful exploring the forest for these treats and afterwards my grandmother made them part of our dinner. Mmmm, so good.
My favorite childhood food memory is at 10 years old smashing open a young jelly coconut in jamaica and experiencing the fresh, sweet taste of jelly coconut. Delicious.
I'm 23 years old, so childhood was pretty recent for me. My most fond memories was spending the sunny summer afternoons with my mom and sister. My mom would take us both in the little buggy on the back of her bike to go to the library. We would spend an hour or so there reading and afterwards she woudl take us to the health food store where we would have a choice of black licorice, honey sticks or fruit leather.
Starting out healthy helped me stay healthy.
this looks delicious
thank you for the chance to win your book
first childhood memory was eating frozen grapes on a hot summers day
or rose petals in the garden
Hayden just asked me if she could try some Cherry-Os. We'll definitely be trying this in our house. Congrats on your latest ebook 🙂
Oops. I forgot to share a favorite food memory, but I did tweet about your new ebook. Let me think. The first thing that comes to mind is the strawberry patch in our backyard. We would pick them everyday they were in season. When I was very small, I was allergic to the strawberries, but luckily outgrew it. Then, I think I ate more strawberries then anyone else 🙂
18 still counts as a kid, right? 😀
Now, all I need is some cherries…
Oh this looks so lovely! My favourite childhood food memory is mixing maple syrup with milk at my best friends house. Such a weird drink if I think of it now…
My mum's apple and boysenberry crumbles which, I now realise, have always been gluten-free and vegan! Walnuts, oats, brown sugar, rye flour, and a bit of melted non-dairy margarine. I remember always trying to convince Mum to give me more crumble than fruit 😛
Lisa, your ebook looks yummy! 🙂
Oh, sorry…my fav. food memory would be when the family went camping and we would make all our campfire fav's!

My favorite childhood food memory is every Summer when I spent time on my grandparent's farm with them here in the Smoky Mountains and I followed my grandpa into their garden so he could pick a nice big juicy watermelon. Then, followed him inside where he cut me a big chunk of it. Yum!!! 🙂 A very special memory of my sweet grandparents I will always cherish.
My grandfather was an organic farmer. There are countless memories of the most dellicious tomatoes that exist now only in memory…juicy cantalouped and sweet corn fresh from the stalk. But the best was the day he would bring in the first new potatoes and tell my grandma to cook them up tot me…whatever. the time of day. Yummy with butter and salt and pepper. Gone are the days of butter too. But what a great memory.
Favorite childhood memory… when I was in kindergarten my Mom would be at the bus stop at the top of the street with a grilled cheese sandwich made especially for me because I was always starving after school.. :O)
